Our client in the sustainable packing industry is searching for a Packaging Designer to join their team. You will be responsible for ensuring all department structural designs and prototypes align with customer intent, our client value proposition, manufacturability, and aesthetics.
This position involves a wide diversity of work situations and requires the ability to manage multiple projects efficiently and with thorough follow-up. Contacts within the company are with local, offsite, and overseas offices. Communications are often with individuals of another cultural background who speak and write in English as a second language. The position deals with company-sensitive information and will operate with limited supervision.
This opportunity is contract-to-hire and will work a flexible hybrid schedule based in Portland, OR.
Produce final, ready-to-manufacturer designs for implementation overseas
Responsible for the entire process from ideation to the technical specification
Ensure product quality by analyzing box design performance utilizing a variety of applicable testing
methods
Collaborate with sales to create design solutions that reflect customer intent, our client’s value, and manufacturability requirements
Oversee design studio materials, software, and equipment
Effectively utilize technology to streamline routine processes
Daily collaboration with internal sales and project management teams
Lead, mentor, and share knowledge with Jr. Structural designers
Frequent communication (phone/Skype, email) with design teams in China and Europe, sometimes after hours
Direct customer contact and interaction
Document training materials and studio best practices
Ability to produce hand-drawn and or 3-dimensional renderings
Utilizing ArtiosCAD, CAPE and Truckfill Solid Works, and Adobe Illustrator on a daily basis
Working with corrugated and/or folding carton manufacturing
Ability to operate test lab equipment
Participate in and lead client meetings
Ability to conduct a DC Audit
Who we’re searching for / About you:
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of work experience and education
4-yr. College Degree in Packaging Design or Industrial Design
4-7 or more years of work experience in structural package design with production experience in the corrugated and/or folding carton industry
Professional experience working with corrugated plant managers, machine operators, fulfillment agents, or other stakeholders/end users
Demonstrated ability to use structural design software (Artios CAD, Score, Impact, etc.) to produce professional designs
Superior verbal and written communication skills
Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate and cooperate effectively across cultural and organizational lines
Ability to handle and prioritize multiple projects in a fast-paced environment
Outstanding organizational skills and attention to detail
Creative problem solver with the ability to work through processes to identify critical paths to success
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
Understanding of packaging testing methods (ISTA and TAPPI)
Ability to sit for extended periods of time, periodically bending, twisting, and applying a negligible amount of force to lift or carry objects

Pay range:
$30-$45/ hour, depending on experience
